Retriever Report May 12, 2023

Message from Dr. TRESler and Mrs. Moraff:

Dear Retriever Families,

First, we would like to thank our PTA and community for all of their generous support during staff appreciation week! We feel so valued and loved! A special shout out to the staff appreciation chair, Mrs. Hodnett, and our PTA President, Mrs. Musgrave, and the parents who volunteered this week for staff appreciation events.

On May 19th while our students are home, we will be busy reflecting on this school year and preparing for the upcoming school year. Teachers will begin working on placing students in groupings for classes for the upcoming 2023-2024 school year. As part of our process, we would like to give you the opportunity to share some information that you would like for us to consider as we begin to make class groupings for the next school year.  This consideration form is for you, as parents/guardians, to relay specific information about your child that you feel would be beneficial as our teachers meet to determine next year's placements.  Class placement changes after class lists are finalized are extremely difficult and often cannot be accommodated.

The form closes on June 2, 2023 for current TRES students.  This is your opportunity to share what you would like us to consider in your child's placement for the next school year.  The time, thought, and commitment put into the completion of this form is appreciated, valued, and highly regarded.

When placing students, the staff and administration utilize a wide range of criteria, which are supportive of the Howard County philosophy of heterogeneous grouping.  Some of these criteria include, but are not limited to:

  • students social/emotional needs
  • racial and ethnic diversity
  • reading and math strengths and needs
  • special education requirements; IEP goals; 504 plans
  • information from previous teachers and school counselor

There are certain concerns that we cannot consider as part of this consideration form: therefore we ask that you not use this form to propose the following:

  • specific teacher requests
  • placement based on siblings’ experiences
  • grouping based on friends
  • grouping based on hearsay about teachers or other children

Your input on this form will be used in our planning for your child rather than a letter requesting a specific teacher.  Your response is OPTIONAL but is a very valuable source of information to the school staff and to the next teacher. You do not need to complete all of the sections. Please complete one form for each of your children. If a situation arises over the summer that changes the information you write on this form, please email Dr. Tresler as soon as possible (tiffany_tresler@hcpss.org).

Warmly,
Dr. Tiffany TRESler, Principal TRES
Mrs. Heather  Moraff, Assistant Principal TRES

News and Information

Register by June 1 for 2023-2024 Bus Service

Families whose students are eligible for HCPSS-provided transportation are required to register by June 1 to receive bus service for the coming 2023-2024 school year. Families who reside in non-transportation areas and those who have students who receive transportation as part of their Individualized Education Program (IEP) or 504 Plan do not need to take any action.

Special Education Parent Involvement Survey

Parents of students with disabilities were sent the Maryland Special Education Parent Involvement Survey. The purpose of this survey is to hear from parents about how well they think their child’s school is partnering with them and promoting parent involvement in their child’s education.  This information will provide valuable feedback for the HCPSS Department of Special Education.  The last day to complete the survey is May 19. The survey can be accessed online.

News From The Health Room

This is a reminder that your child’s medication in the health room at TRES should be picked up by 1pm on June 14, 2023! We will dispose of any medication not picked up by a parent or responsible adult by this date and time. Thank you.
