Message from Dr. TRESler and Mr. Hiel:
Dear Retriever Families,
We’ve had a wonderful start to the school year, and it’s hard to believe we are wrapping up our second week! Students and staff have settled nicely into routines, classrooms are buzzing with learning, and our school community is off to a strong and positive beginning. Thank you for your continued support in helping your children transition smoothly into the year—we are excited for all the growth, learning, and celebrations ahead.
We look forward to seeing our first, second, third, and fifth grade parents next week on September 11th at our second back to school night.
Warm Regards,
Dr. Tiffany TRESler, Principal
Kory Hiel, Assistant Principal

Counselors' Corner - A Message from Mrs. Wolf and Ms. Diaz
We are excited to work with our wonderful families and Retrievers this school year! If you'd like to learn a little more about us, CLICK HERE. Mrs. Wolf will be implementing lessons in grades K, 1, 2, and Ms. Diaz will be implementing lessons in grades 3 and 4. We're BOTH here to assist!
Students recently had a chance to view our first "Welcome Back TRESmission" video (11 minutes). These are released monthly and you can watch this installment together as a family to see some friendly staff faces, hear a welcome, and learn the common language of our traits and expectations.
As referenced in the TRESmission, we'd love to have as many families as possible included in our upcoming hallway display. Be sure to return your completed "Family Square" to homeroom teachers by Friday, September 12th. If this page was overlooked during this busy, busy time of year, simply CLICK HERE to print a copy. Feel free to attach a family photo, but please avoid adding any other glued/heavy decor. YOU belong at TRES and we can't wait to partner with you this year.
HCPSS Policy 9400 - Student Behavior Intervention
The Howard County Public School System (HCPSS) is committed to providing a safe, engaging, and supportive school environment that fosters the social and emotional safety, dignity, and well-being of all students. HCPSS acknowledges the need for employees
- to use an array of research-based positive behavior interventions, strategies, and a tiered system of supports to address student behaviors and keep students safe and free of harm
- to minimize the practice of exclusion from the classroom environment
- to minimize the use of physical restraint (which may only be used when necessary to protect a student or other person from imminent, serious, physical harm and only after other less intrusive, nonphysical interventions have failed or been determined inappropriate).
It is the expectation of the Board that HCPSS employees will be knowledgeable of and implement proactive positive behavior interventions in an effort to reduce the need for exclusion or physical restraint.
Additional information can be found at HCPSS Policy 9400 - Student Behavior Intervention. If you have any questions regarding this policy or its implementation, please reach out to us.
Lunch Visitors
To establish routines, we ask that families who may be planning to join their students for a lunch period wait until October to visit. Thank you in advance for your understanding and please remember that all lunch visitors must also complete the Visitor/Volunteer Training (see below).
Rodent Control in Schools
We are asking for your help keeping our school pest-free all year long and want to share a few things to keep in mind as you send your child to school each day. Since food is one of the main reasons rodents try to get inside a building, please consider following this guidance. Thank you for your help with this.
Volunteer Training Required Every Year for all Visitors and Volunteers - Take 5 Minutes to Complete Now and You're Set for the Year!
COMPLETE THIS GOOGLE DOC (no paperwork required). Anyone volunteering at school in any capacity, and parents joining their children for lunch, are required to complete volunteer training prior to their first visit every school year. Thank you in advance for your gifts of service and time.
Change of Address
Please remember that families are required by Policy 9000 to notify us/HCPSS within 10 days if you move to a new home address. Current residency documentation must be updated each time residency changes. Families now can submit a change of address via Family File, rather than completing a separate form. Full directions and information for families on this new process can be found online.
