Retriever Report February 3, 2023

Fri, 02/03/2023 - 11:34am

Message from Dr. TRESler and Mrs. Moraff:

Dear Retriever Families,

As you will read in this Retriever Report, there are so many great activities coming up for our students and community. Due to the length of our last message and this week’s newsletter, we will keep our message short.

Our wonderful TRES PTA's Donation Drive is underway! Please read more about it below and consider supporting them if you have the means. Our PTA supports so many activities and programs for our students, including many that are coming up! In addition, they support the TRES staff with appreciation activities and reimbursements for some additional classroom supplies. We were so excited to support our PTA that we will each take a pie to the face from a lucky student, chosen by random drawing, from the winning grade level team!

Warmly,
Dr. Tiffany TRESler, Principal TRES
Mrs. Heather  Moraff, Assistant Principal TRES

Field Day 2023 - Volunteer Sign Up Requested by 3/15

We are excited to share that planning is underway for Field Day on May 18th, with a rain date of May 26th.  This is an all-day event for students.  More than 100 volunteers are needed for the day. Volunteers can sign up for the morning, afternoon, or all day. The morning shift is 8:45 a.m. - 11:45 a.m., and the afternoon shift is 12:15 p.m. - 3:00 pm.  We are asking anyone who plans to volunteer for the day to please register by March 15th to allow our PE staff adequate planning time.  If we do not have enough volunteers, we will make alternate plans, which would most likely reduce the event to a half day.

Within a week after you complete the sign-up form, you will receive a confirmation note with your time slot.  It will come home in your child’s folder.

Please use the following link to sign-up to volunteer. For the safety of our students, please stay tuned for more details about signing in for your volunteer shift and completing required trainings. We are working through the process to make it as safe and quick as possible. Thank you for your support!

Hearing & Vision Screening:

Initial screening: Tuesday, February 21, 2023
Re-screening: Monday, February 27, 2023

The Howard County Health Department (HCHD) will be performing hearing & vision screenings for all kindergarten and first grade students. The HCHD will also be screening students grades 2-5 who have been referred by teachers, and newly enrolled students from out of state who do not have a record of prior hearing & vision screening within the last 12 months. An information letter has been sent home for all those in the above-mentioned categories. If parents/guardians wish to opt out, please contact school nurse Kelly Weiss (kelly_weiss@hcpss.org) in writing.

Judges Needed for Unheard Perspective Showcase on February 15th

The Unheard Perspectives seminar is for students in grades 4-5 who volunteer to learn more about an often unheard perspective of a minority innovator in history.  This rigorous, performance-based program has students researching and delving through primary sources such as letters, songs, interviews, pictures and maps, as well as reading newspaper articles, biographies, and much more. Part of each project focuses on contextualizing historical events and innovations in relation to others that are occurring/have occurred.  Students showcase their knowledge in a culminating presentation.

Read more about it here! Then, sign up to be a judge!

Reading Night February 16th from 6:30-7:30 p.m.

The students from Glenelg High School’s Literacy Magazine are hosting a reading night for our kindergarten-second grade students to promote literature in our community and raise funds for a larger literary-centered community event they are holding this Spring, LitFest, at Glenelg High School. The TRES event is free to attend and they will have snacks available for sale. The high school students will do read-out-louds and perform selected books for the students. This event is limited to students in kindergarten through second grade and is not a drop off event. Parents can network in the front hallway and lobby area and do not need to remain in the cafeteria. TRES administrators will be attending to assist the high school students.

Lunch and Recess Update

Parents wishing to eat lunch with their child(ren) must complete the volunteer training process found HERE. Visitors are no longer allowed at recess. This follows a review of county wide practices. Please inquire at the front office if you have any questions. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
